What Is That In Your Hand?

“He who calls you in Faithful, He will surely do it.” 1 Thessalonians 5:24

Our Father has promised us that when He calls us, He will equip us as well. Through His Spirit, He’ll provide us with the ability to do the works He has prepared in advance. He also includes the resources. And by resources, of course I mean Donuts.

Recently, on a quiet night in our neighborhood, Rich and I were enjoying some warm weather on our front porch. I felt a restless desire to further some budding friendships with our neighbors. Names had been exchanged, and friendly waves and “Good Mornings” extended. But we felt the awkwardness of trying to continue, without being the “creepy” new neighbors, and our culture has us all busy coming and going to so many things.

My thoughts were interrupted when Jackson pulled into the driveway from a long day at work, a closing shift at Round Rock Donuts. He had heroically rescued the spoils of the day: Texas-sized donuts – a phenomenon really ’round these parts. Excitedly seeing an opportunity to bless, we jumped up and proceeded to walk these treasures over to our neighbor’s house. Gratefully, they were home, and on that porch ensued delightful conversation and shared laughter.

Memories made.

Friendships deepened.

Donuts enjoyed.

Moses had similar thoughts in Exodus 4, questioning how God could use him. The Lord said to him, “What is that in your hand?” He said, “A staff”. Just an ordinary, everyday walking stick. But it was in his hand, and he was willing for it to be used, even if reluctantly at first. And in the years to come, the Lord used that everyday item in some pretty big ways.

What is that in your hand?

An open seat in your car for a carpool? Tickets to your kids’ games where you can sit next to someone to cheer on their kids and affirm a job well done? An unexpected free block of time to serve a neighbor in need (even if you don’t know them really well)? Ingredients to make a meal for a young family just trying to make it through another week? A phone to text some encouragement or verses (The YouVersion App is great for that)? The leash to your dog that could lead you to cross paths with people you may not normally get to meet? An invitation to a party or meeting where you can connect with others in a new and deeper way. A tool either for work projects or crafts that would bless someone else if they had use of it for a little bit? Giftedness or experience in a certain area that would greatly benefit somebody else if you shared it with them?

Chances are, you already have something in your hand that could help you accomplish what God has in store for you to accomplish. Ask Him to show you what it is, and be willing to leverage it for something more than just yourself.

It could be as basic as a staff.

It could be as simple as a donut.
